New York pizza is all about the hand-tossed, thin and floppy crust! It’s perfect for on-the-go eating, which makes sense for the city that never sleeps!

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2/3 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
  2. In a large bowl, combine oil, salt, yeast mixture, and 1 cup of flour. Beat on medium speed until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Stir in enough additional flour to form a soft dough (the dough will be sticky).
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it until it becomes smooth and elastic, which usually takes about 6-8 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to grease the top. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 475°.
  7. Grease a 14-in. pizza pan.
  8. Roll out the dough to fit the pan, pinching the edges to form a rim. Cover and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  9. Spread the dough with tomato sauce and top it with cheeses, basil, oregano, and pepper flakes.
  10. Bake on a lower oven rack until the crust is lightly browned and the cheese is melted, typically 15-20 minutes.
  11. Allow the pizza to stand for 5 minutes before slicing.
